What is Amoxillin?
Amoxillin is an antibiotic in the penicillin group of drugs. It fights bacteria in your body. amoxillin is used to treat many different types of infections caused by bacteria, such as ear infections, bladder infections, pneumonia, gonorrhea, and or salmonella infection. amoxillin is also sometimes used together with another antibiotic called clarithromycin to treat stomach ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori infection. This combination is sometimes used with a stomach acid reducer called lansoprazole (Prevacid).
How to Take Amoxillin?
Take this medicine exactly as directed by your doctor. Always read the printed information leaflet, if possible, before beginning treatment. If you have been supplied amoxillin oral powder sachets, dissolve the contents in water before taking. Take this medicine at regular intervals and complete the prescribed course. It is important to take the full course, even if you feel your infection has cleared up, to prevent the infection coming back. If you notice no improvement after completing your course of amoxillin make an appointment to see your doctor. Never take more than the prescribed dose. If you suspect that you or someone else has taken an overdose of amoxillin contact your doctor or go to the accident and emergency department of your local hospital at once. Always take the container with you, if possible, even if it is empty. amoxillin is for you. Never give it to others, even if their condition appears to be the same as yours.
Amoxillin side effects:
- fever, peeling, and red skin rash, sore throat, and headache with a severe blistering
- chills, body aches, flu symptoms
- diarrhea that is watery or bloody
- agitation, confusion, unusual thoughts or behavior
- urinating less than usual or not at all
- easy bruising or bleeding, unusual weakness
- seizure.
Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:
- nausea, vomiting, stomach pain
- headache
- vaginal itching or discharge
- thrush
- swollen, black, or hairy tongue.

Amoxillin Precautions:
SERIOUS AND OCCASIONALLY FATAL HYPERSENSITIVITY REACTIONS HAVE BEEN REPORTED IN PATIENTS ON PENICILLIN THERAPY. ALTHOUGH ANAPHYLAXIS IS MORE FREQUENT FOLLOWING PARENTERAL THERAPY, IT HAS OCCURRED IN PATIENTS ON ORAL PENICILLINS. THESE REACTIONS ARE MORE LIKELY TO OCCUR IN INDIVIDUALS WITH A HISTORY OF PENICILLIN HYPERSENSITIVITY AND A HISTORY OF SENSITIVITY TO MULTIPLE ALLERGENS. THERE HAVE BEEN REPORTS OF INDIVIDUALS WITH A HISTORY OF PENICILLIN HYPERSENSITIVITY WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED SEVERE REACTIONS WHEN TREATED WITH CEPHALOSPORINS. BEFORE INITIATING THERAPY WITH amoxillin, CAREFUL INQUIRY SHOULD BE MADE CONCERNING PREVIOUS HYPERSENSITIVITY REACTIONS TO PENICILLINS, CEPHALOSPORINS, OR OTHER ALLERGENS. IF AN ALLERGIC REACTION OCCURS, amoxillin SHOULD BE DISCONTINUED AND APPROPRIATE THERAPY INSTITUTED.
Amoxillin Medication Interactions:
An interaction generally means that one drug may increase or decrease the effect of another drug. Also, the more medications a person takes, the more likely there will be a drug interaction.
Interactions with this drug may occur with the following:
- allopurinol
- atenolol
- probenecid
- antacids
- birth control pills
- other antibiotics.
Amoxillin Overdose:
Overdose symptoms may include confusion, behavior changes, a severe skin rash, urinating less than usual, or seizure (black-out or convulsions).If you suspect an amoxillin overdose, seek medical attention right away.
Amoxillin Missed Dose:
Antibiotics work best when there is a steady blood level. Therefore, it is necessary to take the drug at evenly spaced intervals and to avoid missing doses. If you should miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose and you take 2 doses a day, take the one you missed and the next dose 5 to 6 hours later. If you take 3 or more doses a day, take the one you missed and the next dose 2 to 4 hours later. Then return to your regular schedule. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
Amoxillin Storage:
Amoxillin should be kept in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Capsules and tablets of amoxillin are crystalline in structure, so they should be stored at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). The liquid medication preferably should be kept in the refrigerator, but it may be stored at room temperature.
